Say hello to parenthood! As a parent you are all charged up to raise a well-behaved, good looking, smart and educated kid. You may be a well-intended parent who may be misguided by few misleading information and folktale advices. We have busted few myths related to development of your baby supported by scientific logics.
Fact – If you are buying complex toys to give to your newborn with the hope of having the future Einstein in your home, then you are wasting your money. There is no truth in the myth that sophisticated toys can stimulate growth of baby’s brain. Babies need to grow up amidst love and support that stimulates curiosity and an environment that supports exploration. Don’t be a pushy parent. Let your child grow up at his own pace.
Fact – The baby’s present height is no set parameter that determines the baby’s future height. You cannot predict your baby’s height on the basis of the present length. The fact is that, the average height of the mother and father would be a better predictor of a child’s height in adulthood.
Fact – There is no truth in the myth that children raised in bilingual family get confused between the two languages. In fact, newborns can quite well distinguish between many languages, especially if the accent of the languages is very different from each other. The kids are able to pick up the two languages faster than adults.
Fact – Baby walkers shouldn’t be given to your toddler until the muscles of their legs are strong enough. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) does not recommend walkers for your babies as it could be fatal. The walker does not allow them to see their feet which may end up in an accident. For their normal growth and development, walkers are best avoided.
Fact – The most exhilarating moment is watching your baby taking his first step. Initially, your baby’s legs will appear to be bowed which is absolutely normal. Baby’s legs are bowed due to utero position in the womb. The legs naturally straighten out when babies begin to stand or walk or stretch their legs. Bowlegs are caused due to lack of vitamin D not because of bouncers.
Facts – Research does not support this myth strongly that teething is the only reason for fever in babies. Sometimes parents disregard and ignore fever in baby because of teething. It is important to consult a pediatrician to determine the cause of temperature in babies.
Parents will do anything to have their babies grow up into sharp adults. Do your researches well before you begin to believe in any old wives tales.
